Top Dancewear Store for Reading

Edited: Thu, 29 Jan 2009

Dancia International, Britain’s premier dancewear retailer, has opened its doors to Reading’s thousands of dance enthusiasts with the launch of its new branch in Caversham on 3rd January 2009.

Diane Kirkup, Director of Dancia International, said, “Reading was an obvious choice for the expansion of our network, as the town does not have a high street dancewear store despite an incredibly vibrant dance scene. Our shops are an “Aladdin’s cave” for dance and fitness enthusiasts of all ages, who know they will find everything they need, whether they’re just starting their first lesson or have been dancing for years. We’re looking forward to supplying Reading’s dancers with regulation leotards, tights, crossovers, bags and accessories, not to mention shoes for all styles of dancing including ballet, tap, street, Latin and ballroom.

Jude Chapman, proprietor of Dancia Reading, is very excited about her new branch. “Dancia will fill a longstanding gap in the market, and I know that people will travel to Caversham from all over Reading for our distinctive own-label garments, as well as those by leading brands such as Bloch, Capezio and Freed. Dancia is also the sole UK distributor of world-renowned Gaynor Minden pointe shoes, as worn by top ballerinas worldwide. Caversham has a fantastic array of shops, cafes and restaurants, with ample parking facilities, and I hope that our customers from further afield will make the most of what the area has to offer during their visits to Dancia.”

Monica Cleaver, private ballet teacher and Director of Mo’s Dance & Drama Schools, says she is delighted with the news. “The fitting of pointe shoes is a highly skilled job, and for many years I have taken my ballet students to Dancia’s London store. Now they can have access to Dancia’s trained staff without travelling outside of Reading. That has to be good news for all local ballet students”.

Dancia International is at 36-38 Prospect Street, Caversham, Reading RG4 8JL.
Opening hours: Mon-Fri:10am-5.30pm. Sat: 9.30am-5pm.

Ruben Harymbat and Enriqueta Kleinman in Chicago, February 4-10, 2009

Edited: Thu, 22 Jan 2009

The X Academy Dance and Theatre School Ruben Harymbat and Enriqueta Kleinman, will be in Chicago from February 4-10, 2009 to start off their three month U.S. tour which will include the Portland Tango Festival, Tuscon Tango Festival, and Chicago Mini Tango Festival. They will be doing workshops on Saturday, February 7th and Sunday, February 8th.

Ruben Harymbat:
Ruben Harymbat (Ruben de Pompeya) taught and performed at the 2008 Chicago Mini Tango Festival. Ruben is a milonguero from the golden era of tango. Ruben was born, bred and still living with his wife Haydee in the Buenos Aires barrio of Pompeya. Ruben has been dancing for over 50 years, having started when he was 14 years old. In those days, before professional teaching developed, he learned from his brothers and male cousins and friends.

Although highly respected for his dancing, Ruben never wanted to take his dancing to a professional level. He describes himself as a humble man who has always kept a low profile. Ruben worked for 43 years in the Argentine Post Office.

Ruben raised his family with his wife, Haydee, "a beautiful dancer" he says. But Haydee had problems with her knees which means she can no longer dance.

Ruben's passion for the tango is evident as soon as you see him on the dancer floor. His energy belies his age, or perhaps it is indicative of the many years he has expressed himself through the dance. Ruben is the
"master of improvisation" and owner of enormous creativy. Ruben is highly sought out dancer in Argentina for performances. His performance partners have included Enriqueta Kleinman, Anna Maria Schapira, Alicia Pons, Susana Miller, Maria Plazaola, and Marisa Galindo among others. Ruben was invited to perform in November 2007 for the Congress of the Nation of Argentina in homage in "Recognition to the Milongueros of the night in Buenos Aires."

Ruben participated in the 2007 and 2008 Festival Tango Estilo Milonguero and also at the 2008 Chicago Mini Tango Festival. He has given seminars with Susana Miller and Maria Plazaola at "La Academia" in Buenos Aires. Ruben has also made numerous trips to Brazil to teach and perform.

Enriqueta Kleinman:
Enriqueta has danced tango for over 15 years. She presently teaches group and private classes in Buenos Aires. The classes are for both men and women. She is an expert in Salon Tango - Milonguero Style, Tango Waltz and Milonga. Enriqueta also specializes in teaching technique for women and has led many courses and seminars. She performed at the Third and Fifth Metropolitan Championships in Buenos Aires. She has done a number of performances in Buenos Aires including at Salon Canning, Cachirulo (Maipu 444), and at the Confiteria Ideal at the First Milongueando Festival in Buenos Aires. She has been an instructor at Susana Miller's La Academia and presently teaches at Maipu 444. Enriqueta and has taught and performed in San Diego, Iowa, Chicago, and at May Madness at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.

Fred Olsen Dance-Oriented Cruises

Edited: Wed, 21 Jan 2009

Romance and rhythms, dancing the night away. People are never to old to learn how to dance. However, while most people can tap their feet to music and many are prepared to take to the dance floor, there remains, for a few, nothing to compare to the masterful art of dance. Our dance cruises are a mixture of practical tuition and exploration of the ways in which dance has changed over the past 50 years. Selected cruises will offer Ballroom and Latin American dance while others will concentrate on the more disciplined art of sequence dance. Try your skill at the Latin American tango, the fiery Spanish flamenco, Strauss waltzes and polkas through our friendly and informative group sessions and hosted dancing.

Lord Of The Dance returns to the UK for 2009

Edited: Sat, 17 Jan 2009

Lord of the Dance Critically acclaimed dance show, 'Lord of The Dance' is back to tour the UK this year, starting from 29th April and running all the way through to December.

'Lord of The Dance', created by the talented Irish-American dancer Michael Flatley back in 1996, has thrilled and mesmerised audiences around the world. From the moment the lights go down to the last encore, spectators are spellbound by a masterfully orchestrated combination of precision dancing, state of the art lighting and music. It has also brought the magic of Irish dance into the international arena.

The story of the show is based on Irish folklore, which is a classic tale of Good vs. Evil, expressed through the universal language of dance. As the story unfolds, it shows a mythical universe of love, danger and desire.

Although Michael no longer performs on the show, he is still very much involved in the production, to ensure that the highest standards and reputations are maintained. Michael performed his final show at Dublin's RDS arena back in 1998 on 28th June, after having been involved in 390 performances. Since then he has created and starred in two more spectacular productions: 'Feet of Flames' and 'Celtic Tiger'.

There are currently two Lord of The Dance troupes touring the globe, one within North America, and one touring worldwide.
