Dance teachers wern’t ready for new year wireless legal deadline

View Dance teachers wern’t ready for new year wireless legal deadline on DanceWeb DanceWeb

1 January 2013 saw a line-in-the-sand drawn for the legal use of many wireless microphone systems widely used by dance teachers and in schools, colleges and universities across the UK. According to national specialist retailer and installer EAV Pro Audio, up to 75% of users were unaware of the impending change, meaning they may now be breaking the law, unwittingly.

Following the ‘digital TV switchover’ this year, some of the radio frequencies currently used by wireless microphones have been re-allocated to allow the broadcast of Freeview television signals and new 4G mobile technologies. The knock-on effect is that many wireless microphones in use may now conflict with these signals and are therefore now illegal to use.

EAV managing director, Glyn Chapman said, “We’re shocked by just how little awareness there is amongst schools, colleges and universities about the changes in the law.” He went on to say, “in our experience, up to three quarters of education users don’t understand the changes, let alone know if their equipment is compliant.”

Not all equipment is affected by the changes, but the technicalities can be complicated by the number of microphones in use, the location and frequency settings currently in use. EAV is urging all wireless users to seek professional advice if they haven’t already.

Talking about how people can check their compliance with the law, Glyn said, “we urge people to use our online equipment checker at www.e-av.co.uk or call us for free advice if they are concerned - we’re always happy to help demystify the complexities of the technology!”

Wireless microphone users can check their compliance by using the special free tool at www.e-av.co.uk or by calling 0845 125 9409 and talking to one of EAV’s specialists, again free of charge.

Lindy Hop Legend Frankie Manning dies at 94

View Lindy Hop Legend Frankie Manning dies at 94 on DanceWeb DanceWeb

Frankie Manning Frankie "Musclehead" Manning, a Harlem dancer and Tony Award-winning choreographer widely celebrated as one of the pioneers of the Lindy Hop, a breathlessly acrobatic swing dance style of the 1930s and '40s, died April 27 2009 at New York City's Lenox Hill Hospital of pneumonia. He was 94.

The effortlessly nimble Manning was a star attraction of Harlem's Savoy ballroom and brought to swing dance a flair for the theatrical that helped catapult the Lindy Hop from ballrooms to stage and screen, said Cynthia Millman, who co-wrote Manning's self-titled 2007 memoir.

His nickname ('Musclehead') developed from the chants of dancers, "Go, Musclehead, go!" as they watched Manning's strong and closely cropped head glisten with sweat as he kicked and spun himself, and his partners, into human propellers.

Appropriately, the dance reportedly owed its name to transatlantic aviator Charles Lindbergh, when one Savoy dancer told a reporter, "We flyin' like Lindy!"

Lindy Hoppers needed for Video Shoot, London, 14 March

Edited: Tue, 10 Mar 2009

Frankie Manning Fancy seeing yourself on You Tube? Want to send a birthday greeting to Lindy Hop legend Frankie Manning?

We want to shoot a couple of promotional You Tube clips outdoors in the centre of London for the London Swing Dance Society and Club Dance Holidays, plus a special Birthday tribute which will be sent to Frankie Manning who is celebrating his 95th Birthday in New York this May.

We need:

*100s of Lindy Hoppers of all levels from beginners to advanced.

* People who can film the event with their own HD camera and are happy to send us the footage for us to edit into one final clip.

* A few volunteers who can help with the coordination of the filming, i.e. runners.

We are making these videos on no budget but in return we would offer our heartfelt thanks for making this happen plus a half price entrance to Stompin on Monday 16th March at the 100 Club for everyone who takes part.

Not essential, but it would be really useful if you attended the Tuesday Intermediate classes at Wild Times this week where we will be teaching some of the moves we plan to use in the clip. We also plan to film all the dancers doing a Birthday Shim Sham for Frankie Manning.

If you would like to take part or feel you can help please email Kirsty at swinguk@zetnet.co.uk with Promo Video in the subject line by Friday 13th March, in order that we know how many people will be coming on the day and have your names listed on door at Stompin for your discount.

Where: South Molton Street, London (near Bond Street tube) - exact meeting location to be confirmed - watch out for further emails!

When: Saturday 14th March 09

Time: Arrive by 8.30am ready for filming at 9.45am (Filming should be finished by 10.30am)
