Dance Master Class, Urbania, Italy Jul-August 2009

View Dance Master Class, Urbania, Italy Jul-August 2009 on DanceWeb DanceWeb

Dance Master Class Dance Master Class offers a professionally staffed comprehensive dance curriculum which is uniquely coupled with intensive Italian or English language classes.

We present the Dance Experience Italian summer programme which is held in Urbania, Italy and runs from 18th July to 14th August 2009. The course is designed to give dancers an opportunity to grow technically and artistically in a professional atmosphere and allow them to develop, or advance a working knowledge of modern Italian or English in the sumptuous surroundings of the Italian countryside. This valuable summer programme is available to dancers and dance students of Intermediate through to Advanced levels from the age of 14. We are happy to accept slightly younger candidates (under 14) provided they have reached the required standard and are definitely accompanied by a responsible adult.

Alongside technique classes in contemporary, ballet and jazz, dancers may be coached in related disciplines including pointe, repertoire, variations, virtuosity and also participate in the choreographic workshops. These workshops will provide the dancers with a valuable insight into the challenges of the choreographic process and will call upon each dancer’s unique input. Direct involvement in the creative process and personal interaction with our dedicated staff will encourage personal growth in both technical and artistic areas. Please note that pointe-work is not a necessary requirement for the choreographies and is not a prerequisite on this programme.
Our course culminates with live participation in a performance at the beautiful Teatro Bramante.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Participation in the performance requires that you attend the ‘Theatre Course’2 weeks prior to the end of the course. (week commencing August 1st - classes August 3rd)

There are several course options which we hope will suit the individual talents of each applicant and provide for each the choice of programme they would most enjoy.

For those unsure as to whether to study a language we recommend you try a course for just one week. Why not learn just enough Italian to converse in shops and restaurants during your stay and begin to learn some vocabulary so as to better understand Italian opera!

These dance courses may be taken with or without a language course.

1. Ballet and Contemporary.
2. Ballet and Jazz.
3. Contemporary and Jazz.
4. Ballet and Contemporary and Jazz.
5. Adult Program. A perfect course for late beginners as well as the more experienced adult dancer. Included is a special movement class and dance classes. Take this opportunity to try something new, pick up on the past or keep fit as well as learn some essential language skills! Our classes provide a fun and satisfying way to improve muscle tone, flexibility and co-ordination as well as improving dance technique.

We also offer a Jazz Special: Slick, stylish and not to be missed, this mini course will introduce you to distinctive choreography and help you build a range of moves into a great routine or audition piece.

Please note the Jazz Special and Adult Program are open to all levels.

The current situation concerning the meager language learning facilities in some schools, has prompted us this year to opening the course to dancers from the age of 14 through to adult so providing the opportunity for firsthand language and cultural exchange as part of the daily experience.

We recommend that all candidates under the age of 16 be accompanied by a parent, guardian or adult travel companion who will be responsible for the welfare of the candidate during their trip. However by request, some supervision can be arranged for their stay in Urbania.

May we suggest a family and friends study holiday for companions not wishing to dance? There are various courses available in culture, gastronomy and ceramics as well as languages. Ask for details.

Please join us for an unforgettable experience where Italian, English and the Universal Language of Dance come together in a friendly atmosphere for a rewarding cross-cultural experience in the heart of the Italian countryside, replete with all the historic richness and beauty of Italian culture.

Further information can be found in our information pack.

Scholarship Awards:

Dance Master Class is awarding scholarships to male students for dance tuition fees.

Awards will be given to attend the Theatre Program, 3 and 4 week courses.

For further details: applicants must submit an application form together with a jpeg photograph in a balletic pose.

Please be advised that the awards will not include the costs for travel, accommodation or sundries.

Further scholarships are awarded in Urbania to deserving, motivated and hard working dancers.

Proposed Schedule:

8:30-17:00 Daily Technique Class, Dance Classes and Italian/English Language Classes.

Breaks will be given during the day!

18:00-20:30 Choreographic workshops and rehearsals.

Dance Classes
Weekdays including Saturdays classes in contemporary, jazz, ballet, pointe, repertoire, variations, partnering and virtuosity.

Italian/English Language Classes
(Monday-Friday)
These classes are conducted in small groups. The students are arranged into linguistic levels from complete beginner to more fluent students. Our teachers are practiced in modern methods of teaching Italian/English as a foreign language.

Choreographic workshops and rehearsals These are preparations for the performance at the Teartro Bramante.

A working time table will posted up on the first day of the course.

New at Dance Books - an important Diaghilev Reprint

View New at Dance Books - an important Diaghilev Reprint on DanceWeb DanceWeb

This week we're delighted to be able to add to our stock a reprint of Serge Grigoriev's 'The Diaghilev Ballet, 1909 - 1929', one of the most important books on the Diaghilev company but, paradoxically, one of the least well known.

Its importance derives from the fact that, apart from Diaghilev himself, Grigoriev was the sole member of the Ballet Russe who was with the company from its inception to its dissolution on Diaghilev's untimely death. Grigoriev was Diaghilev's right-hand man, and dealt with all aspects of running the company save that of financing it - hiring and firing dancers, taking class, supervising rehearsals, etc. He kept a detailed log book of his and the company's activities, and in the early 1950s distilled this into a history of the company - the sole complete first-hand account we have.

The book's scarcity derives from its chequered publishing history: an initial hardback edition in 1953 had a short life and was never reprinted, a Penguin edition in the 1960s was printed on such cheap paper that most copies soon disintegrated, and an American reprint in the early 1970s fell victim to a flood in the publisher's warehouse. The book has thus been out of print for more than 30 years, and is an essential addition to the library of anyone with even the remotest history of ballet in the twentieth century.

As usual, you'll find details of this and other new items, together with on-line ordering facilities at:

2009 CMS Argentine Tango Institute: Music Study, July, Buenos Aires

View 2009 CMS Argentine Tango Institute: Music Study, July, Buenos Aires on DanceWeb DanceWeb

The CMS Tango Institute will combine tango scholarly studies with practical musical and cultural experiences, and provide participants with an authentic and holistic tango experience in the city of the art form s birth, Buenos Aires. The instrumental music portion of the Institute is under the direction of Sonia Possetti (pianist, composer, arranger) and Damian Bolot¡n (violinist, composer, and arranger), who were recently featured during the 10th Tango Festival in Buenos Aires on August 23, 2008 with their own major concert performance. The academic studies portion of the Institute will be conducted by Institute Director, Kristin Wendland.

The intensive 2-week program of study of tango music will integrate tango history, theory, practice, and culture, appealing to scholars and musicians who are interested in interdisciplinary studies, world music, and popular urban forms. It is designed for trained and experienced musicians who want to go to the source of the tango genre and have an authentic experience. The Institute will be limited to 12 participants (2 pianists, 2 bandoneonists, 4 violinists, 1 violist, 1 cellist, and 2 bassists) grouped into three ensembles: two piano quartets (violin, bass, bandoneon, and piano), and one standard string quartet.

The practical, scholarly, and cultural aspects of the Institute also seek to promote on-going connections between North and South American musicians who study, write, and play tango music. We seek to encourage a professional and cultural exchange of musical knowledge and skills as well as friendship and camaraderie between musicians.
