The CMS Tango Institute will combine tango scholarly studies with practical musical and cultural experiences, and provide participants with an authentic and holistic tango experience in the city of the art form s birth, Buenos Aires. The instrumental music portion of the Institute is under the direction of Sonia Possetti (pianist, composer, arranger) and Damian Bolot¡n (violinist, composer, and arranger), who were recently featured during the 10th Tango Festival in Buenos Aires on August 23, 2008 with their own major concert performance. The academic studies portion of the Institute will be conducted by Institute Director, Kristin Wendland.

The intensive 2-week program of study of tango music will integrate tango history, theory, practice, and culture, appealing to scholars and musicians who are interested in interdisciplinary studies, world music, and popular urban forms. It is designed for trained and experienced musicians who want to go to the source of the tango genre and have an authentic experience. The Institute will be limited to 12 participants (2 pianists, 2 bandoneonists, 4 violinists, 1 violist, 1 cellist, and 2 bassists) grouped into three ensembles: two piano quartets (violin, bass, bandoneon, and piano), and one standard string quartet.

The practical, scholarly, and cultural aspects of the Institute also seek to promote on-going connections between North and South American musicians who study, write, and play tango music. We seek to encourage a professional and cultural exchange of musical knowledge and skills as well as friendship and camaraderie between musicians.
