MODERN LINEDANCING 2011:
The term "Modern Linedancing" has come more into use in the last-3-6 years and is often used to help distinguish it from the traditional side of Linedancing. The traditional styles still flourish in many areas across the UK, but more clubs now advertise their style of dancing as Modern Linedancing.
Towards the end of 2010 a number of UK instructors felt the old image of Linedance was a factor in preventing many new people taking up Linedancing. Plus, every time the TV/media portrays Linedancing, the producers continue to show the old "yee haw" with everybody wearing cowboy hats image. So the instructors set out to try and change this image, and as a result the Modern Linedance movement was born.
Modern Linedancing in 2011is danced to many different style of music: Pop-Latin Disco-Rock-Swing-Hip-Hop-Mowtown-R&B-Celtic-Funky-Country. Visit any Modern Linedance class in your area and you_re very likely to hear songs by artists such as Michael Buble, LadyGaGa, JLS, The Killers, Akon, Alexander Burke, Maroon 5, Rihanna, Riverdance etc. Also, at Modern Linedance classes, and social events, most people come wearing everyday smart casual clothes.
Country & Western Linedancing (traditional): The traditional style of Linedancing differs in that dancing is still done mostly to a wide range of country music, old stuff and up-to-date songs. Quite often newer style dances are not done if suitable country music can't be found.

LINEDANCE HISTORY (briefly):
If truth be known all Linedancing started way back with the old folk dances and western hoedowns. But Linedancing as we know it today was introduced in the latter half of the twentieth century. Some say the movie Urban Cowboy starring a young John Travolta started off the popular Linedance craze (mind you JT
always has been a good mover!).
For many though, Linedancing started with the 1992 Billy Ray Cyrus country hit "Achy Breaky Heart". A video with Billy Ray singing, and dancers in the foreground, helped the song and dance go global. Then in the mid 90s another new dance "Swamp Thing" by American choreographer Max Perry, came along. This was one of the first known techno/non-country songs used for Linedancing; the real start of Modern Linedancing?
As the "new country" movement took hold in the late 80s, many of the leading country artists Alan Jackson, Dwight Yoakham, Travis Tritt, Marty Stewart etc, recorded songs specifically for the country dance market.
While American choreographers (Max Perry, Jo Thompson and others) have led the way, along with the likes of Rob Fowler, Robbie McGowan Hickey, Kate Sala (to name but a small few), the UK now has a top-class group of choreographers whose dances are performed all over the world. These are being joined regularly by choreographers from Europe and creators of wonderful new Linedances from all around the world. It's true to say that in 2011, Modern Linedancing is truly a
global phenomenon!

DanceHouseUK has recently gained Recognised School status, just a short time after opening its doors. The award from the UK wide Council for Dance Education and Training acknowledges DanceHouseUK's policies and procedures as exceeding their stringent standards.
